looking for…

June 21, 2010

Keuka Lake is a strong base for my happiness in life.  It’s been a place that I’ve loved bringing friends home to when I lived out of state, and it’s been the anchor that has kept me here (and kept me happy) since moving back to New York in 2004.

I love the sunshine gleaming off the water in the morning while I enjoy coffee on our cottage patio.  I relax with the sound of waves rolling up on shore all day and night.  I’m comforted by the movement of the boat when floating around, reading a book and enjoying sunshine on my skin.  It’s all about the water, really.  It all revolves around the water.

As the weather has gotten warmer, and as I’m still not working full time, I’m drawn to the lake every available moment I have.  Being disconnected from the world is a wonderful thing.  Our cottage has no television, no internet.  I don’t write as much, but I do a lot more thinking.

There’s an old adage about how you never find something when you’re looking for it.  Once you stop looking, you realize it’s right in front of your face.

Recently I’ve realized that you can actually be focused very intently in the opposite direction and the thing you were looking for sneaks up from behind and surprises you.

The lake has always been there, and it hasn’t been a surprise to see it right behind me every time I turn around.  Realizing though that it can be more of a focus, or even a focal point, was unexpected… but not unwelcome.

All it took was a simple shift in focus.
