i’m in love

December 5, 2010

So.  I suppose it’s about time I explain my month long hiatus from blogging.

It’s true.  I’m in love.

After an extensive search including living with, looking for, checking out new and old… I’ve finally found the one.

At first I was skeptical.  Previously I’ve been drawn more towards new options with things I haven’t had in the past.  But somehow I’ve ended up with older.  Much older.  And yet, I’m incredibly happy.

Given, some things aren’t perfect.  There are certain… things… that are a bit, shall we say, small, for this girl’s liking.  And yet we’re making due.

The heat isn’t always there when expected either.  At times it’s a bit too cool, and I’ll admit if I’d really understood the issue from the beginning perhaps I’d not have even pursued this… but then without warning everything heats up.  With quite a bit of ruckus, actually.  And it all makes up for those chillier times.

Even the cat is in love.  There was a short adjustment period for her, but I’ve never seen Leenah so content.

Sure, November brings my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, and that’s kept me busy too.  But there’s been many nights where we’ve really wanted to just stay in, light some candles, sit by the fireplace and watch a movie.  Or cuddle.  Or read.

Surprisingly, in one quick month, I’m settled and comfortable enough to admit that I’m in love.

With my new apartment.

I’m living alone again for the first time since 2004 and it’s everything I remember and have been waiting for.

True, the kitchen is much smaller than I’ve ever had to deal with and it’s creating a bit of a storage and usage issue, but I think we’ll get that settled as time goes by.

As for the heat?  Having never lived with steam heat before I’ll admit it’s required some growing accustomed to.  I may keep the thermostat at 80 degrees, but it never warms up past 70.  And it doesn’t hit 70 until it’s dropped to 60 and then everything kicks on, with a lot of hissing and a bit of clanking.  But it’s quickly becoming background noise, and I’ve always got a cozy zip up sweater handy, so I don’t really mind.

The hardwood floors have provided some amusement for sure, as the cat really has some cartoon moments when she gets spooked and wants to flee from the room fast.  She’s adapted, though.  This 9 year old cat is playing and having fun like she did when she was a kitten.  It’s great seeing her comfortable and even… dare I say it… social when people are over.

Did you see the mention above about a fireplace too?  That’s right, fireplace. It may not actually be functional, but it certainly adds complexity.  This house is close to 200 years old and as much as I prefer newer construction, the homey-ness and character (even though I hate that word) of this place is beyond what any new build could offer.

So I’ve taken a month to get moved in and organized.  My goal was to have everything arranged and even things hung on the walls by Thanksgiving… and I accomplished that.  I debated skipping the TV/internet thing in order to save money; that lasted for 3 weeks until I went insane trekking all around with my laptop just to get a few moments of interwebs time.  But also blogging would be out of the question without a hookup at home so I caved.

Now, this weekend is the first that I’ve had to really just sit, relax and enjoy being alone with my new love.  And it’s been wonderful.
